What is Live Bidding?

Beares Auctions is exclusively online, as there is no auction room where the sale is taking place. This means you can bid in “real-time” anywhere in the world from your computer, tablet or mobile device.

By pressing the ‘Buy Now’ button a bidder will see the price at which the instrument can be purchased online prior to the bidding phase. As usual, the buyer’s commission will be subsequently added to this price. For the most prestigious lots, the bidder will be asked to contact a member of staff at Beares Auctions, who, having established the potential bidder’s identity and qualification, will be in a position to discuss an immediate purchase price and other details. We ask that only qualified registered bidders contact us in case of serious interest in purchasing such lots. The ‘Buy Now’ price will be somewhere between the low and the high estimates.
The ‘Buy Now’ option expires when the auction phase begins. If at that point the lot has not yet been purchased, there will still be an opportunity to buy it through the regular online bidding.

Can I leave a Proxy Bid?

Proxy bids are accepted through our online platform. While a lot is active, navigate to the bidding area and click on “Leave a Proxy Bid”. Here you can choose your proxy bid from a drop-down incremental menu, which is the highest amount you are willing to pay for the lot. Beares Auctions will automatically bid on your behalf, each time by the specified increment but only as much as necessary to ensure that you remain in the lead, up to your maximum bid. We will notify you if another bidder places a bid that is higher than your maximum bid. Your maximum bid is kept confidential until it is exceeded by another bidder.

When does the auction end?

Beares Auctions runs a timed auction system. Each lot can be bid on for a defined time period. At the end of this period, the bidder who has submitted the highest bid wins the lot, provided the bid exceeds the reserve price. When active bidding on a lot occurs within the last ten minutes  of a particular lot’s published ending time, the ending time will be automatically extended by 10 minutes. The ending time may extend indefinitely until all underbidders are satisfied that they do not wish to up a current high bid.

Can somebody bid on my behalf?

Yes, by providing somebody with access to your account you can authorise them to bid as you, but please remember: your unique Bidder ID represents you online and all bids placed using your ID will be accepted and are non-refundable. Alternatively you may leave a Proxy Bid.

What documentation will I get?

All instrument sold as “by” a particular maker will be accompanied with a J&A Beare Certificate of Authenticity in addition to any previously existing documents, unless the item is under £25,000.

I have won an auction lot, how do I pay?

If you have won an auction lot, you will be contacted with a preliminary confirmation within 24 hours of the lot’s end time. You will be provided with a full invoice including commissions within 24 hours of the end of the entire auction.

What payment types do you accept?
