Beares Auctions will consistently offer instruments of the highest quality to be found in the violin auction industry. Instruments in all price ranges are vetted for suitability and a J & A Beare certificate (or letter) of authenticity will be supplied to the purchaser where the instrument is described as ‘by’ the work of a specific maker. We do not provide certificates for bows.

Our commission rates are the most competitive in the field. The buyer’s commission is calculated on the hammer price at a rate of 20% + VAT. Other tax may be applicable, please refer to VAT symbols and shipping for more information.

For Buyers

Online Bidding

Bidding is online and is convenient and simple. You will be required to register in order to bid; you will then receive a unique ID number and be asked to create a password (it will be your responsibility to keep these confidential and you will be responsible for any activity on your account). The bidding is in increments as shown in the table below, and they will be clearly indicated on screen while you bid.

If bidding on a lot is still active within the last 10 minutes of its published bidding ending time, this will be automatically extended by 10 minutes. The ending time may be extended indefinitely until all underbidders are satisfied that they do not wish to increase the current high bid.

You may leave a proxy bid using the “Leave A Proxy Bid” tab next to the bidding window. Please be aware that you must leave a maximum bid higher than the next increment for this to take effect. The next increment is indicated in the Proxy Bid drop down menu e.g. “£8,500”. The program will bid on your behalf incrementally.

Proxy Bidding

Estimates are shown as a guide only and bidding will have a starting price at or around the low end of the estimate. We determine auction estimates based on such factors as condition, type of example, provenance and authenticity.

Each lot has a ‘reserve’ price, below which it will not sell (the reserve is a confidential minimum figure agreed with the seller). When the reserve price has been met the price shown will change from red to green.

Estimates and Reserves

Some lots might be available for sale through the ‘Buy Now’ option. By pressing the ‘Buy Now’ button a bidder will see the price at which the instrument can be purchased online prior to the bidding phase. The ‘Buy Now’ price will be somewhere between the low and the high estimates. As usual, the buyer’s commission will be subsequently added to this price.

For the most prestigious lots, the bidder will be asked to contact a member of staff at Beares Auctions, who, having established the potential bidder’s identity and qualification, will be in a position to discuss an immediate purchase price and other details. We ask that only qualified registered bidders contact us in case of serious interest in purchasing such lots.

The ‘Buy Now’ option expires when the auction phase begins. If at that point the lot has not yet been purchased, there will still be an opportunity to buy it through the regular online bidding.

Buy Now

There are several ways to buy from Beares Auctions. An item might be available for sale through the ‘Buy Now’ option. If it does not sell during that phase, it will go to 'Bidding'. If it remains unsold at the end of the 'Bidding' period, we then welcome potential buyers to 'Make An Offer' by submitting it (excluding commissions and VAT) using the form on the applicable Lot.

Beares Auctions will contact you within 24 hours to let your know whether your offer has been accepted. The 'Make An Offer' phase will be available for one week and during that time you can raise your offer if you wish to increase your chances of securing the lot.

At the end of the 'Make An Offer' period, if your offer is the highest of those that have been submitted, we will notify you that you have been successful and you will be invoiced for that amount plus auction commission and VAT, if applicable. Please note: all offers are legally binding.

If the item still remains unsold following the above phase, it may still return to the bidding process in the future, subject to the seller's authorisation.

Make An Offer

‘By Nicolo Gagliano’
This indicates that in our judgment the work is by this maker. Lots indicated as ‘by’ a particular maker are accompanied by a J & A Beare certificate (or letter) of authenticity, which will be issued to the buyer following purchase at no extra cost.

‘Attributed to Nicolo Gagliano’

A traditional attribution of the instrument’s maker with which we may not agree.

‘Ascribed to Nicolo Gagliano’
Literature accompanying the lot ascribes the instrument to the work of a particular maker although our opinion may differ.

‘Workshop of Nicolo Gagliano’
In our opinion the instrument was probably made in the workshop with the guidance of the master but not necessarily ‘by’ him.

‘Labelled, signed, branded or stamped Nicolo Gagliano’
This means that there is a label or other indication of the name ‘Nicolo Gagliano’ but this is intended to provide a description only and not an indication of authorship.
